Students of Jasikan College of Education in the Oti Region started a protest against what they described as “Peaceful Demo”
The President of the Students Representative Council (SRC) of Jasikan College of Education was today arrested by the police when the students went on demonstration to demand better food
In the midst of the demonstration the students were heard chanting, “No student will go to the dining hall until certain conditions are met to draw public attention to their plight which centre on poor nutrition
They alleged that they have been served poor quality meals regularly in the past eight months
In their march for better food the students outlined other grievances linked to the following challenges
1. Serving students with koko without bread and sugar
2. Regular disconnection of electricity at the Agnata Hall which denies female teachers access to electricity to charge their mobile phones
3. Alleged maltreatment of student teachers by the college secretary, Mr Anane Dogbe also known as Kayasman
Explaining further their grievances to Wontumi News, a student who for some reason’s wants to hide identity accused the college secretary, Mr Anane Dogbe for tormenting the students as as well as some lecturers of the college for the past years
He alleged that college’s secretary, threatened the student body with arrest by the police for protesting against the bad meals usually served them at the dining Hall, and truly in the course of the peaceful demonstration, a police patrol team arrived on the college premises as the secretary asked the well armed officers to arrest the SRC president who was also slapped in the face. A video on the police assault on the SRC president has gone viral on some social media platforms.
There is also an allegation that an amount of 51 cedis has been deducted from each of the students allowance to enable the school feed them well, after the deduction of the 51cedis from the allowances, it’s been almost 3 weeks since there hasn’t been any new development when it comes to the meal being served which led to this peaceful demonstration.
