The Ahafo Regional Direction of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Mr. Osei Bonsu has cautioned Ghanaians to stop the construction of houses and other facilities in waterlogged areas to avoid flooding that damages properties and sometimes leads to casualties.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with High Radio News, Mr. Osei Bonsu indicated that people intentionally construct houses, containers, farms, and other buildings in waterlogged areas that bring about monumental flooding whenever it rains indicating some other people also do the same out of ignorance.

He pleaded that people must stay away from constructing buildings in and around where it is not permissible to build and for those who have already constructed must create tranches or gutters to direct the movement of the water to prevent flooding.

Mr. Osei Bonsu opined that Nananom must liaise with the planners and engineers of the various MMDAs to ensure that lands released to members for the construction of their houses and other facilities are not in waterlogged sites.

He indicated that these planners and engineers at the various assemblies will give detailed information on where a building must be put up this according to him will ensure effective land settlement and prevent flooding during the rainy season.

He finally pleaded with people with weak roofing systems to commence renovation to strengthen their houses to prevent future unforeseen circumstances that may befall them when it rains.

He added that people must desist from unlawful cutting down of trees and start practicing afforestation because trees are very essential in preventing the wind from blowing away roofs of buildings.
