The Minority in Parliament made up of National Democratic Congress (NDC) Members of Parliament (MPs), has warned that under no circumstance would it allow the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) to conduct the 2024 General Elections without the use of indelible ink to mark those who have cast their votes.
The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) announced last year that it had ceased the use of indelible ink on the fingers of voters who cast their votes in public elections and referenda.
The commission implemented the reforms with the District Level Elections held in December 2023.
In a speech in the Volta Region during a tour of the region by NDC flagbearer John Mahama, the Minority Chief Whip, Governs Kwame Agbodza warned that there would be dire consequences if the EC goes ahead in 2024 with it’s no-indelible-ink policy, adding that the plan to close polls at 3:00 pm will be resisted as well.
“Mr President [John Mahama], the EC has conducted illegal District Level Elections. The use of indelible ink is not a discussion. It is a matter of law. But I promise you when Parliament resumes, your gallant Minority side will take the necessary action against the EC. We promise the people of this country that the thinking of conducting the 2024 election without indelible ink or closing at 3 pm can only happen on our dead bodies. It will not happen,” he warned.
The NDC had rejected the no-indelible-ink reform of the EC, explaining that it would allow people to engage in multiple voting easily. However, the EC argued that with the biometric verification system, no voter would be able to vote more than once. The commission then went ahead to implement it in the district-level elections in December 2023.
