The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia has applauded former Trades and Industry Minister, Alan John Kwadwo Kyeremanten for breaking away from the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Mr Kyeremanten following a failed attempt to become the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2024 elections has defected from the ruling party to form a new Independent political group. He would seek to contest the 2024 elections on the ticket of this movement.

His breakaway has attracted varied reactions from political watchers and politicians in general with some indicating that there is no way he can win the 2024 elections as an Independent presidential candidate.

Reacting to his defection on Angel Morning Show on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, the former General Secretary of the NDC said the actions of Mr Kyeremanten ought to be applauded and not condemned.

According to him, Alan Kyeremanten through this action has shown that he is unwilling to be party of a group of people who are destroying the world-acclaimed democratic credentials of the country.

“I have heard some NDC members and those who are speaking against corrupt acts in the NPP attacking Alan Kyeremanten but why must this happen, he is helping to protect the country’s democracy from falling apart and ought to be applauded instead…,” he said.

He further predicted that he sees known supporters of the ruling NPP regrouping under the umbrella of the new political party like the predecessors of the NPP did prior to Ghana’s independence and also before 1979.

“Alan is not acting in ways that are different from what his predecessors did in the past…,” he said.
