AN UNIDENTIFIED man believed to be in his 30s narrowly escaped death last Tuesday at the Labour Roundabout in Kumasi for allegedly stealing GH¢700 from Osei Kwame, a lotto agent.

Some officers of the Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service who were monitoring traffic in the area rescued the suspected thief from being lynched.

Eyewitnesses told DAILY GUIDE that the lotto agent had left the money on his counter and was going to cash out undisclosed amount of money from a nearby mobile money operator to enable him to pay a client who had won a lottery.

Immediately the lotto agent left, the man who was suspected to be monitoring the movement of the agent swiftly moved into his shop to steal the money.

Luck, however, eluded him as a hawker who saw him committing the alleged crime quickly raised an alarm, attracting curious people to the scene.

Sensing danger, the suspect took to his heels but the lotto agent with the help of other men gave him a hot chase, leading to his arrest a few meters away.

Surprisingly, the suspect engaged Osei Kwame in a scuffle, protesting that he had wrongly been accused of theft.

An instant search conducted on him by an officer from the MTTD, revealed that the suspect had concealed the money in his boxer shorts.

Infuriated by this development, some of the eyewitnesses subjected the suspect to severe beatings with stones, sticks and other objects they could lay their hands on, making him to bleed profusely from his nostrils and other parts of his body.

Police officers who were called to the scene managed to rescue the suspect and whisked him in a taxi to the Zongo Police Station.
