As the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) gets set to elect its 2024 flagbearer on November 4, 2023, the main opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has already crossed that mark.
What is left is for the 2024 flagbearer, John Mahama to announce his running mate, expected to be in the first quarter of next year.
There is so much certainty within the NDC towards 2028 that whether Mahama wins or loses, the party will have a new flagbearer for the 2028 elections.
Credible information the Daily Dispatch is picking up is that some leading members of the NDC are setting their sights on the NDC’s 2028 flagbearer slot.
A very senior NDC member said “Even if Mahama loses the 2024 presidential elections, there is no way will attempt to contest the NDC slot for 2028.
One such leading member of the NDC looking ahead to the 2028 NDC flagbearer slot is the current National Chairman, Mr. Asiedu Nketia who is said to be getting set to contest to be the NDC 2028 flagbearer.
Popularly known as ‘General Mosquito, he has even pinpointed his running mate for 2028 – the current General Secretary of the party, Mr. Fili Kwetey.
“General Mosquito was for 17 years, the General Secretary of the NDC and with his huge connections in the party, the battle for the NDC’s 2028 flagbearer slot will be interesting and tough.
Other persons who are said to be interested in the 2028 NDC flagbearer slot include Mr. Julius Debrah (also a possible 2024 running mate): Mr. Awuah Darko; Mr. Ofosu Ampofo (a former National Chairman); Mr. Alex Mould and Mr. Sylvester Mensah.
As regards who Mr. Mahama will choose as his 2024 running mate, it is said to be between his 2020 running mate, Prof. Naana Opoku-Agyeman and a leading member and his former Chief of Staff, Mr. Julius Debrah.
