IT HAS emerged that Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, once visited the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi at 12 midnight.

The Asante Monarch embarked on this strange visit on a fact-finding mission, to at first hand, monitor the true state of the health institution.

According to Asante Monarch, he heard several complaints and reports that KATH, especially the old Gee blocks, which were built in the 1950’s, were fast deteriorating.

Otumfuo also disclosed that the current KATH CEO, Prof Okyere Addai Mensah, once, also confirmed to him (Otumfuo) that the hospital was in bad state.

These unimpressive information, the Asantehene said, influenced him to embark on those late night visits to the medical facility so he could verify himself.

According to the Asante King, he doesn’t subscribe to rumours so when he heard the news about the deplorable state of the Gee blocks, he decided to verify himself.

“I don’t take action based on rumours in town so when I heard about reports that KATH was in difficult times, I decided to visit the hospital and check myself.

“I therefore embarked on night visits sometimes after 12 midnight to personally assess the true state of the hospital, which was named after my friend, Komfo Anokye.

“And during my visits, sadly, I realized that the hospital, especially the old Gee blocks, were indeed in deplorable state and therefore needed immediate attention”.

This the King explained, made him to accept the Heal Komfo Anokye Project when it was proposed to him, noting that all-and-sundry should help to save KATH.

Otumfuo made the remarks during the official launching of the Heal Komfo Anokye Project at KATH in Kumasi on Friday.
