One Stabbed In Kasoa NDC, NPP Clash

The police yesterday arrested two people in connection with the stabbing incident that occurred at the Electoral Commission’s District Office at Ofaakor near Kasoa in the Central Region.

The injured was identified as Ato Koomson, the son of Mavis Hawa Koomson, Member of Parliament (MP) for Awutu Senya East and Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development.

He was stabbed during a confrontation between supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at Ofaakor. Ato Koomson was stabbed in the chest and taken to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra due to the severity of his injuries, DAILY GUIDE gathered.

King Adawu, an NPP member, also got a hand cut while attempting to block the knife purportedly pulled by Daniel Techie Mensah, the NDC Constituency Organiser.

Unconfirmed reports said one NDC member was also injured during the clash.

The violence broke out at the Electoral Commission’s District Office at Ofaakor, purportedly due to a disagreement about the queuing of voters attempting to transfer their votes to the constituency.

Michael Addo, the NPP Constituency Secretary for Awutu Senya East, stated that he was contacted early on Sunday, June 2, about a dispute over seating arrangements at a place where the EC was conducting its process to transfer votes and replace lost ID cards.

“At around 4:30, we got information that there was a misunderstanding over the seating arrangement at the centre. And so we got there and noticed that the issue was escalating.

“Ato Koomson, the son of MP Hawa Koomson, came around and tried to maintain peace but one gentleman from the NDC resisted and decided to attack Ato Koomson instead,” he narrated.

“The police have arrested the gentleman in question and so we will follow up later,” Michael Addo said.

“We are going to follow this case to its full conclusion and ensure that what is right is done, irrespective of who is involved. So, we are appealing to the police that they must expedite action in ensuring that justice is duly served,” he stated.

The Awutu Senya East NDC, in a statement, condemned the incident and blamed it on the NPP.

Delali Seworkpor, the Constituency Communication Officer, who signed the statement, described the incident as simply another example of the NPP’s violence and lawlessness.

The NDC further accused Ato Koomson of being behind the violence, stating, “We are closely monitoring the police’s actions in dealing with the issues.”

“We have noticed with concern the police decision to take into custody Daniel Techie Mensah, the NDC Constituency Organiser and this action appears selective and raises questions about the impartiality of the police,” the statement read.

The police arrested two persons, including the NDC Constituency Organiser in connection with the violence.
