In a surprising revelation, a Constituency Executive of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region has been exposed as concurrently serving as a Ward Chairman for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the same constituency, specifically in Fomena.

The concerning incident came to light in the Fomena Constituency, where it was discovered that the Treasurer of the NPP also holds the position of Ward Chairperson within the NDC, according to former Constituency Chairman Akwasi Nti. Nti expressed dismay over the integrity of the last Constituency election, branding it as shambolic.

Speaking on a local radio station in Kumasi, Akwasi Nti revealed, ‘The situation is such that the constituency Treasurer of NPP is also serving as a Ward Chairperson of the NDC. Yes, I am telling you on authority.’

Nti further asserted that this situation extends beyond the Treasurer, encompassing several other sensitive roles within the NPP Fomena Constituency. He pledged to provide evidence supporting the allegations when invited.

The controversy surrounding the constituency’s internal politics dates back to 2022 when the NPP held a delegates’ conference in Fomena, despite facing an interim injunction against the exercise. The election took place at the St. Hubert Roman Catholic Church at Akrokeri, where 356 party delegates elected candidates for all 10 constituency executive positions.

Notably, the treasurer elected at that event was Afia Nuamah, who narrowly defeated Bright Abu by a single vote. However, the Electoral Commission (EC) was unavailable to supervise the elections due to a court issue.

The election faced legal challenges as two aggrieved members, Benjamin Ofori and Kwame Anokye, contested the credibility of the polling station elections. They argued that individuals who had forfeited their party membership by supporting an independent candidate in the 2020 general elections were allowed to contest various positions.

Akwasi Nti alleges that these events resulted in the election of individuals with questionable loyalty to the party, including the revelation that a Constituency Executive of the NPP is serving as the Ward Chairman of the opposition NDC. The political landscape in Fomena is now marked by uncertainty and calls for further investigation into the intricacies of the constituency’s internal dynamics.
