A former First Deputy Speaker of ParliamentJoseph Osei-Owusu, has shared two key strategies that any Minority caucus can consider adopting to strengthen their role in the execution of their duties.

Speaking exclusively with GhanaWeb‘s Mandy Agyemang on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, via phone, the distinguished politician said that oversight and offering a superior alternative are two key strategies the Minority should consider embracing.

Joe Wise, as he is affectionately known, suggested that the Minority, in maintaining oversight, should ensure they thoroughly scrutinise every business and proposal presented by the government.

According to him, the caucus should ensure that every government business aligns with the laws and constitution of the country and should be ready to highlight any shortcomings when necessary.

“… oversight to make sure that everything the government is presenting is clearly scrutinised, compare that to the constitution and any relevant law and point out any shortcomings if they find one,” he told GhanaWeb.

The former Bekwai MP also suggested that the Minority could present themselves to the government as a better alternative, challenging the public perception that they are not a strong force.

“Secondly, the duty is to show that even if there is nothing wrong with the document presented by the government, they the Minority have an alternative which is superior. These are the things I would be discussing with the Minority Leader and how to present the Minority as a better alternative to the government,” he added.

Joseph Osei-Owusu shared his views while discussing the overall performance of the Minority in the 9th Parliament.
