Pro-New Patriotic Party group, Ashanti Youth Organizers, has refuted claims of endorsing Manhyia South Member of Parliament and Minister of Energy, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), as Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s running mate.

The selection of a Running Mate for the NPP Flagbearer has become one topical issue within the rank and file of the party as months draw the December elections closer. With names of dignified personalities cropping up every now and then, the likes of the Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum and Energy Minister, Matthew Opoku Prempeh have remained stable amongst the rest.

In a statement, the group affirmed their notice of rumours purporting to be an endorsement from them towards NAPO to be selected as Running Mate.
The group said they had taken note of reports in circulation that they have endorsed the Manhyia North Lawmaker to be running mate. According to them, the purported endorsement only reflects the views of some persons within the group but not a representation of the entire group and by that, the selection of a running mate is burdened on the Flagbearer.

“ We wish to address the recent press statement regarding alleged widespread support for Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh for the position of running mate. It’s important to clarify that this assertion does not accurately represent the sentiments of the majority of youth organizers in the Ashanti Region. The purported endorsement merely reflects the views of a few individuals and does not speak on behalf of the broader Youth Organisers or their Constituency. . Article 12 (b) of the Constitution of the New Patriotic Party provides that, the selection of the vice-presidential candidate rests with the Presidential Candidate, in consultation with the National Council of the part”, the statement read.

Unequivocally, the group stated that, no youth group within the rank and file of the Elephant Party has the mandate to select a Running Mate through the exertion of direct and indirect pressure on the Presidential Candidate. They noted that such actions undermine the democratic principles of the party.

“It is not within the mandate of youth organizers to exert pressure, whether directly or indirectly, on the Presidential Candidate regarding the choice of a running mate. Such actions would constitute undue influence and run counter to the democratic principles of our party”.

The group further urged all party members to rally behind Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia so he can select a running mate who will complement him and attain general approval from Ghanaians ahead of the crucial December elections.

“We urge all members of our party to extend their support and prayers to the presidential candidate through prayers and encouragement as they deliberate on selecting a suitable vice-presidential candidate. Let us collectively uphold the democratic values of our party and strive towards unity in preparation for the upcoming elections,” the statement added.
