Member of Parliament(MP) for Tema West, Carlos Ahenkorah, has defended the continuous existence of the COVID-19 Levy.
He said that when Ghana was on lockdown and the government gave out some freebies, it was expected that the government would rake in some income to pay for the debt accrued.
The Lawmaker argued that the government does not conjure money and therefore has to bill the people to pay for the expenses.
“When we were on lockdown and you were taking your salary, who do you expect to pay for that? When we were on lockdown and you were enjoying free water among others, who did you expect to pay for that?
“They thought that government was Prof. Diego to conjure, and sika gari will come. The government doesn’t do sika gari. The government will have to take the money from you and me,” he said.
He compared Ghana’s case to Liberia, indicating that importers always pay for monies lost when the war was in full force.
