They are expected to bring their years of rich political and election campaign experience to bear on the Bawumia bid for the presidency

Four senior members of the New Patriotic Party are expected to be appointed by the NPP presidential candidate and sitting Vice-President of the Republic, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, as his senior campaign advisors.

They are Fred Oware, a former first national vice-chairman of the NPP, Peter Mac Manu, a former national chairman of the NPP and manager for President Akufo-Addo’s successful 2016 and 2020 campaigns, the former deputy roads minister Anthony Karbo and Sammi Awuku, the former national organiser of the NPP.

The four campaign advisors are expected to bring their years of rich political and election campaign experience to bear on Dr Bawumia’s bid for Ghana’s presidency.

Fred Oware, Sammi Awuku and Anthony Karbo are also deemed to be key members of the Bawumia inner circle.

It is believed that the choice of the four campaign chiefs is a strategic move by the NPP presidential candidate also to keep a good blend of young NPP stalwarts and other top party officials.

Consultations

The four advisors are also expected to keep the presidential candidate up to speed on key campaign matters throughout the campaign period.

On Monday (19 February), Dr Bawumia will present the list of his campaign team members to the National Executive Committee for consideration and approval, Asaase News has learned.

Asaase News sources familiar with the campaign composition process the NPP presidential candidate is using say that the NPP leader has been carrying out broad consultations with the party rank and file.

“The list to be presented to NEC during its scheduled meeting on Monday will reflect the philosophy, strategy and focus of the NPP’s 2024 campaign,” said a source at the party headquarters in Asylum Down, Accra.

Following the presentation of the list to NEC, and a meeting with some other political heavyweights and dynamic individuals who are in the mix, it is expected that “Team Bawumia” will be announced.

Rampant reshuffle

On Wednesday (14 February), President Akufo-Addo announced the most radical reshuffle in the history of the Fourth Republic.

Thirteen ministers and ten deputy ministers lost their jobs. Eleven new deputy ministers and nine new ministers-designate were appointed.

Five standing ministers and one deputy minister were also reassigned.

The reshuffle reduced the average age among Akufo-Addo’s government ministers to 47.

Dr Bawumia’s campaign team is expected to have a mix of experience and youth, giving the tough battle ahead the kind of dynamism required.
