A forty-year-old “abortion doctor”, Charlotte Asiedu has been convicted by the Assin Fosu Magistrate Court of illegal abortion and fined GHC 4,800.
It came to light in Court that Ms Asiedu, who is a hairdresser, had induced a 17-year-old student with a concoction so as to help her terminate a 17-week pregnancy. The concoction, however, caused the victim severe stomach pain leading to her hospitalization.
Ms Asiedu’s accomplice, a 21-year-old boyfriend of the pregnant girl, was also convicted of abetment of crime by the court and fined GHC 4,800.
Details of case.
Before the Court presided over by Justice Abdul Majid Iliasu, the convicts had pleaded guilty and were therefore convicted on their own plea.
According to the prosecution led by Inspector Matilda Osaah Buabeng, the mother of the victim, Victoria Arthur, lodged a complaint with the Assin Fosu police when she found out that the hospitalisation of her daughter was due to her having drunk a concoction provided by Ms Asiedu to get rid of her pregnancy.
She added that it was the victim’s boyfriend who sought the services of Ms Asiedu at GHC 200 in order to abort the pregnancy. The victim, moments after taking the concoction, had to be rushed to the St Francis Xavier Hospital in Assin Fosu for medical attention given the severity of her reaction to the concoction.
The victim is currently still receiving medical attention.
