A Lawyer and Senior Vice President of IMANI-Africa, Kofi Bentil is unsatisfied with the situation where the election of flagbearers of various political parties is placed in the hands of a selected few.

Mr Bentil says Ghana is one of the few countries in the world that has a system where cell phones can be traced to humans. According to him, political parties should invest in programming in order to provide every member of the party the opportunity to cast their vote through cell phones.

He suggests that the recently vetted flagbearer aspirants of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) should consider making his proposition one of their goals so that every member of the party can vote during their internal election.

“I am praying for the day when all members of a party will be able to be part of the selection of the presidential candidate. And I wish to submit to the party that the technology exists. You can vote by cell phone. That programming can be done.

“They should make it one of their goals so that by 2024, they’ll create a platform where their members will register with their cell phones – and Ghana is one of the few countries in the world where cell phones can actually be traced to a person – and then on the day, people can actually vote by cell phones so that they can pick their flagbearers,” he said on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday.

Touching on the NPP flagbearer race, the lawyer said he was satisfied with the vetting process, stressing that the party must provide the best candidate.

But he also established that there are no perfect choices, especially in politics.

“You are looking at the person who’s going to be more or less the worst of all the evil,” he said.

Meanwhile, the NPP has completed its vetting processes and has given all ten aspirants the greenlight to contest despite the contention that the number will be reduced to five.

This means all aspirants can now begin campaigning and ready themselves for the final election on November 4, 2023.
