The seven-member special committee ordered by the Speaker of Parliament to be set up to look into the leaked audio recording purportedly to capture some police and part officials plotting the ousting of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) is now complete.

Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin had given the Minority and Majority sides a week to come up with three names each for membership.

He had directed this on Thursday, July 13.

A seventh person, who will have technical expertise, was also to be included, Speaker Bagbin said.

On Tuesday, July 25, the caucuses presented the names of their representatives on the special committee.

For the Majority, Samuel Atta Akyea, Patrick Yaw Boamah and Ophelia Mensah Hayford were the names presented while the Minority presented James Agalga, Eric Opoku and Peter Toobu.

The seventh person is Dr Isaac Lartey Annan.

Mr Atta Akyea, who is the Member of Parliament (MP) for Abuakwa South Constituency, will serve as the Chairman of the Committee with Mr Agalga, who is the MP for Builsa North, serving as the Vice Chairman.

According to the Speaker, the committee will investigate the authenticity of the leaked audio recording, the conspiracy to remove the current IGP, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, any other matter contained in the audio recording and recommend sanctions to persons found culpable where appropriate.

It is also to make recommendations for reforms where necessary and make such other recommendations and consequential orders as the committee may deem appropriate.

The audio recording captures voices of some top officials said to be with the Ghana Police Service and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) discussing the IGP.

They are heard questioning the impartiality of the IGP, claiming he has the support of former President John Dramani Mahama, and so scheming to ensure the return of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The persons are, therefore, calling for his removal before the 2024 general elections.

The party official whose voice is heard on the tape is said to be the former Northern Region Chairman of the NPP, Daniel Bugri Naabu, who has denied recording the conversation.
