Former President John Dramani Mahama has raised concerns about the attacks and insults rained on the Paramount Chief of the Dormaa Traditional Area, Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II, over his calls for the criminal trial of Assin North Member of Parliament James Gyakye Quayson to be discontinued.

The Dormaahene, speaking at the 10th anniversary lecture of John Evans Atta Mills in Sunyani earlier this month, appealed to the Attorney General to file a nolle prosequi in court on the case after the apparent endorsement of Mr Gyakye Quayson by his constituents in the by-election of Tuesday, June 27.

“As a matter of urgency, I am appealing to the President of the Republic that if he has any role to play in that trial, it should be aborted. The Attorney General should as a matter of urgency file a nolle prosequi to end that particular decision.

“Honestly, I don’t see the benefits this prosecution will bring Ghanaians. If he is in court, he can’t fulfill his mandate so the President and the Attorney General should do something urgently to end this matter, so we move on as Ghanaians,” he added

Accusing the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the attacks, Mr Mahama said the revered traditional ruler and his status as a High Court judge, who, he adds, has received praises for his judgements, was disregarded by the attackers.

“For me, if they continue or not or stop or not, all I will say is whatever they do, we in the NDC are behind John Quayson,” he said in Twi.

The 2024 flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was speaking at a rally at the Methodist School Park in Assin Breku to wrap up the opposition party’s Thank You tour.

The tour, climaxed on Sunday, July 9, was to thank constituents in Assin North for the electoral victory given to the NDC.

Mr Gyakye Quayson, whose election in 2020 was annulled by the Supreme Court, was re-elected in the by-election.

For Mr Mahama, that election will go into the annals of the country and a precursor to 2024 after the constituents stood steadfast in the face of goodies showered on them by the NPP.

“We thank you Assin North. All Ghanaians are thankful. What I am saying is we will never forget you. In case the history of Ghana is written, yours will be engraved in gold.”
