John Dramani Mahama, the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has condemned the rate at which this government has accrued debts and has been adamant about finding a way to pay them off.
Speaking at the ‘Building Ghana We Want Tour’ in the North East region, he opined that the Nana Addo-led administration has managed to push all major debts due beyond this fiscal year for the next government to bear the load of payment.
The former president stated that the government is contracting loans to address every single concern in the country.
He said that they had accumulated loans to the point where our debt stock was now $1.5 billion.
“All they are waiting to do is push it across January 7, 2025, and make it the next government’s headache. That is what this government has done.
He asserted that the current government does not want to be held accountable for its mismanagement and corrupt deeds.
“But I can assure them that the people of Ghana will hold them accountable for what they’ve done. We are going to hunt anybody, but if you have messed up the lives of the people of Ghana and misappropriated their money, you must account for it. And so the investigative institutions and anti-corruption institutions are going to work. If you have crossed the line and are part of the problem and the hardship that has been inflicted on Ghanaians over the last seven years, you must account for it. And I said that we are not going to pursue post-regime accountability alone; we are going to pursue regime accountability.
It means we are not only going to investigate our predecessors, but even in our government, if you also fall foul of the law, you will be held to account. So, the youth of this country, you must recognise the harm that has been inflicted upon you. Many of us are senior citizens now; how many years have we had to live and yet look at the kind of mortality of your future that has been done?
