The former President, John Dramani Mahama, has retained Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman as his running mate for the upcoming 2024 general elections.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), in a press release dated Thursday, March 7, 2024 announced the decision.

The statement spoke highly of the first female Vice Chancellor of Cape Coast University, expressing their confidence in her to help the party unseat the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In a statement signed by the General Secretary of the NDC, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the party said Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang is a distinguished academic and leader. The party also highlighted her dedication to education and public service.

INCLUSIVE

The NDC viewed her nomination as a reflection of the party’s steadfast commitment to promoting inclusivity, diversity, and the empowerment of women in leadership positions.

According to the statement, she brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the NDC’s presidential ticket going into the December elections.

It said, “The National Democratic Congress (NDC) proudly announces the selection of Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as the running mate to the party’s flag bearer, John Dramani Mahama, for the 2024 presidential elections.”

The statement continued that, “Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang is a distinguished academic and leader renowned for her dedication to education and public service.

 

 

Having served as Minister for Education and as the first female Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, she has emerged as a trailblazer for women in leadership across Ghana.

“Her nomination underscores the NDC’s unwavering commitment to inclusivity, diversity, and the empowerment of women in leadership roles.Possessing extensive qualifications and experience, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the NDC’s presidential ticket,” an excerpt of the party’s statement said.

PROUD

The flag bearer of the NDC, John Mahama, whose choice the leadership of the party accepted, made a brief post on his official Facebook page shortly after the announcement by the party.

John Mahama said in that post that he was “proud to have Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as my running mate.

“Her integrity, dedication, and vision for a better Ghana make her the ideal candidate to join me in leading our party to victory in the upcoming elections,” he added.

ACCEPTANCE

In a press release later yesterday, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang said she had received the news of her re-nomination with profound humility and great honour.

“It is worthy of note that this is the second time former President John Mahama has nominated me as his running mate. I express my eternal gratitude to him,” she remarked.

According to her, by making this choice, the flagbearer had demonstrated remarkable consistency, commitment to inclusivity and innovation, and a belief in the Ghanaian woman.

She expressed appreciation to the NDC Council of Elders, the National Executive Committee and the rank and file of the party for the overwhelming support and endorsement.

Meanwhile, she said that, “I am not one to take lightly the confidence reposed in me, neither am I oblivious of the national decay and widespread despondency in our beloved country,” and expressed her readiness and commitment to partner John Mahama.

NO DOUBT

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang opined that she had no doubt in her mind that the nation could count on John Mahama to give her the kind of leadership that Ghana needs to transform its fortunes.

While pledging to give this task everything in her, she asserted that Ghanaians are looking up to the NDC and expressed her belief in the NDC’s unflinching resolve and sacred pledge to work hard to build the Ghana citizens want.
